Renewed Hope

I have to admit that I'd begun to lose some faith in the American people.  Not in their ability to produce or fight for their country, but in their political intellect.  With this past election season and the aura of **CHANGE** all around, it seemed that big government was in and the American Dream, a self-driven non-government funded chance at the American Dream, was out.  But alas, it seems that we have begun to take the rose-colored lenses off and started to pay attention again.

At the beginning of this whole healthcare debate (the current one), Americans seemed to be right on board.  "Obama is bringing change and that means to our healthcare system too!  He's right...let's take the profits out of healthcare.  Then, we'll be left with the same quality of healthcare but we can provide it to everyone!"  This statement is in line with the 70-75% approval rating for the current healthcare proposal that coincided with the beginning of this debate.  But then a strange thing happened--people began to pay attention.  They began to look through the weak, superficial logic of the Democrats' healthcare argument and say, "Hey, maybe this really isn't the right step for us to be taking".  I couldn't agree more.

In the latest polls, support for the current healthcare proposal is slipping dramatically, all the way down to below 50%.  People don't want this healthcare proposal.  President Obama gave us the bailouts and it remains to be seen how well those will work...and who knows how long we'll be waiting.  Not much of that money has even walked out the door and into the hands of the people yet...what makes us think that healthcare will be some quick fix?  Sure, healthcare has its problems but this plan fails to address some of the major core issues at hand, such as tort reform and cost transparency.  The American people are seeing that and demanding something different.  And it's good to see that--blind hope for bad change isn't the hope-change combo for which we were looking.

Starting somewhere and looking forward...or should I look backward?

I guess I have to start somewhere.  But where could I possibly begin?  As I racked my brain for the initial blog post, I found that I'm very indecisive.  Call it ADD if you want, but I couldn't really settle on one topic and then expand.  But then I found myself listening to the radio, specifically The Thom Hartmann Show, and realized that my own inability to look forward and settle on an idea is indicative of so much of the discussion out there today.

In an era of "change", why must we continue to discuss the past and want to focus on perceived shortcomings of past leaders when we possess only the power to change what lies ahead?  Thom Hartmann discussed prosecuting basically every individual associated with the George W. Bush administration and ultimately calling out our new forward-thinking president.  Talking of how irresponsible it is to let these people roam free, Hartmann talked of the Nuremburg Trials and bringing our former leaders down following that precedent.  If we really want to go that far, must we try the Senators themselves (Democrats included) that voted overwhelmingly for us to go to war?

Personally, I think it's time to look forward, not backward, and see what kind of positive change we can make.  Healthcare is on the table (an issue to be discussed soon) as well as sweeping changes that can alter the look of this nation for years to come.  It's not time for our Senators to hold hearings and simply cast out blame for where we are; it's time for our Senators and the administration to move us forward.  People have been given bad situations before but as we've seen so many times before, Americans have an amazing ability to rise out of these situations and be successful.  This is what we call the American Dream.  It's time for our leaders to show us the American Dream on a much grander scale--to take a bad situation for the country as a whole and bring us out of it, re-affirming our place as the world's superpower.  It just remains to be seen whether or not we can hold our focus and look that far forward.
